Have you ever regretted buying a used car? What happened?

I’ve been wondering how common buyer’s remorse is when it comes to used cars. A few years ago, I bought what looked like a great deal. The car had a clean appearance, drove well during the test drive, and the price seemed fair. Unfortunately, the problems started showing up within a few weeks.

The first issue was an unexpected oil leak, followed by electrical faults that became more frequent over time. By the time everything was repaired, I had spent much more than I originally planned. Looking back, I realized I focused too much on the asking price and not enough on the vehicle’s history and condition.

Since then, I’ve changed the way I shop for used cars. I also spend more time researching trends in the Japan car sales market because many imported vehicles have detailed maintenance records, but I still believe every car should be inspected carefully before making a decision.

Here are a few lessons I learned the hard way:

  • Never skip a professional pre-purchase inspection.
  • Check the service history, not just the mileage.
  • Take a longer test drive if possible.
  • Budget for unexpected repairs, even if the car seems perfect.
  • Don't rush into buying because a deal looks too good to miss.

That experience definitely made me a more careful buyer, and I haven't repeated the same mistake since.

Has anyone else regretted buying a used car? What went wrong, and what advice would you give to someone trying to avoid the same experience?
