Formatting in computers means setting up the storage device with a file system for an operating system like Windows to read, write and manage data on the device. Formatting may become necessary for new drives, when you need to change the file system or solve storage issues. However, formatting will erase existing files from the computer, and hence it shouldn't be the first option when the drive has important files. When your drive is already formatted, you shouldn't continue adding new files on the drive and think of file recovery software like Notchox to scan the storage device.
